Covid-19 India: More than 9.3 lakh cases within a Week

In the last 7 days, India recorded 9.37 lakh new Covid-19 cases at a rate of 1.33 lakh cases per day. There was a 70 percent increase in cases over the previous week's figures.

The world on Sunday recorded 6.32 lakh cases of Covid-19. Of which India alone registered around 1.70 lakh cases of Covid-19. This is nearly 27 percent of all coronavirus infections recorded worldwide.

EFFECT OF COVID-19 WAVE LAST WEEK:

During the past seven days (April 5-11), India recorded 9.37 lakh cases at an average of 1.33 lakh Covid-19 cases a day. It was a 70 percent rise in Covid-19 cases over the previous week. The overall Covid-19 caseload increased from under 1.26 crore to over 1.35 crore. Active Covid-19 cases jumped by over 4.5 lakh.

CURRENTLY INFECTED COUNT:

This sharp spike in daily coronavirus infections pushed the active Covid-19 caseload about 12 lakh. It was 7.41 lakh on April 5. The maximum active caseload had gone to 10.17 lakh on September 17 when the first wave of Covid-19 pandemic had peaked. The declining trend continued for about the next five months bringing the active Covid-19 caseload to 1.33 lakh on February 11.

IMPACT OF COVID-19 SECOND WAVE ON INDIA:

Covid-19 pandemic revived in the country in the second half of February after which the daily cases have been rising alarmingly. Since April 4, when India reported over 1 lakh Covid-19 cases for the first time, the country has recorded a daily increase in coronavirus infections on all days except April 5 when it dipped to 96,500 cases.

The death toll also rose sharply during the last week reaching the highest in the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic on Sunday. India recorded 903 fatalities due to Covid-19 on Sunday.

This was the highest single-day death toll due to Covid-19 since October 10. The weekly death toll due to Covid-19 jumped 70 percent in the past seven days during which 5,079 people died of complications arising out of coronavirus infection.

WORST AFFECTED STATES:

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state due to Covid-19. Maharashtra recorded over 63,000 Covid-19 cases or 37 percent of all coronavirus infections India registered on Sunday, and 349 deaths or about 39 percent of fatalities due to the pandemic.

But Delhi nudged past Mumbai to become the city with the highest number of Covid-19 cases. It recorded 10,774 Covid-19 cases on Sunday. Mumbai recorded 9,986 cases of Covid-19 on Sunday.

Besides, Maharashtra and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu are other states hit severely by the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, just four states — Maharashtra (63,294), Uttar Pradesh (15,276), Delhi (10,774) and Karnataka (10,250) — accounted for almost 100,000 Covid-19 cases on Sunday.

HOW HAS GOVERNMENT RESPONDED?

With the volume of active Covid-19 cases swelling vastly over the last week, the central government and various state governments took a range of measures.

The central government on Sunday banned the export of anti-viral drug Remdesivir and its active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). Remdesivir is considered a life-saving drug for critically ill Covid-19 patients. The record spike in Covid-19 cases saw many states reporting a shortage of the drug.

The central government, acting on the inputs of its teams, told state governments of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Punjab to enforce the Covid-19 safety rules strictly. This came on the back of inputs that Covid-19 safety protocol is not being adhered to in almost all of the 50 worst-affected districts in the country.

Several state governments including Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, and Karnataka have imposed several restrictions on the movement of people. However, a general consensus seems to be against a complete lockdown as seen during March-May 2020 to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
